In September, Hazel & Nikki from Limbrick Wood Baptist Church had a fantastic idea to start a new youth drop-in for young people in their local area of Tile Hill, Coventry and came to Thrive, asking for some help.
Their inspiration for the group came after Fiona Stutton, Thrive’s Children’s Ministry Adviser, visited the church one Sunday in August. She shared with them the story of Jonah and the people of Nineveh.
When God told Jonah to go and preach to the people of Nineveh, his first response was to run as far away as he could get. It can be intimidating to think about taking God’s message to others and yet, as we see in the story of Jonah, God expects His people to share His love with people who do not yet know Him, and Hazel & Nikki felt this was specifically the young people in their community.
Jonah was the inspiration and fun was the format. Ryan McNair, one of Thrive’s new Youth Mission Enablers, helped them to start this new Monday youth drop-in during October half-term with a cinema club. Popcorn and ‘Detective Pikachu’ provided the entertainment and set us up for the new half-term.
Each Monday, Ryan helps the leaders to welcome young people as they come along to the church for games, table tennis, toast and hot chocolate. Also, they have enjoyed having sparklers during bonfire night and painting rocks.
Each week, they get the chance to read and talk about the story of Jonah. It has been really exciting to see the young people engage with this story and to talk about who God is, what He is like and to learn that He answers prayers. They even had the chance to pray, just like Jonah did, and it was a joy to hear one of the young people join in with the leader’s prayers.
This group has been so encouraging to be involved with and we are excited to see what God has in store for them in the future. We ask that you pray for the young people who come along to keep learning more about God and that the leaders will continue to have opportunities to share their faith with them.
