Trying Something New – Youth Ministry in Everyday Places
At Thrive, we love sharing stories of churches stepping out in faith, trying something fresh, and creating spaces where young people can explore life with God.
Over the past year, we’ve walked alongside two churches who have done exactly that—meeting young people not in a church hall, but in their local coffee shop.
Holy Trinity Church in Leamington Spa and Castle Hill Baptist Church have each taken the bold step of moving youth ministry into settings that feel natural and welcoming. Instead of asking young people to come to them, they’ve gone out—creating small groups that meet over drinks, build friendships, open the Bible, and talk about faith in ways that feel relaxed and real. Volunteers have modelled Christ-like hospitality by listening well, caring deeply, and making room for honest conversations.
Holy Trinity’s Milkshake Club
Every Thursday after school, a handful of young people drop into a coffee shop on their walk home. The church treats them to a milkshake or toast while youth leaders chat about their day, share a short Bible passage using Thrive’s Faith Burst material, and guide a simple six-step reflection.
The group always ends with prayer—something the young people now embrace boldly, even in a busy café. It’s a beautiful picture of discipleship growing in an ordinary space.
Castle Hill Baptist’s Unfold Group
Castle Hill Baptist wanted a fresh way for older teens to dig deeper into Scripture. Using Youthscape’s Unfold resource, they meet on Sunday mornings in a local café to read a passage together, layer by layer, asking questions and sharing discoveries.
One leader said, “I personally discovered things I’d never noticed before, so I imagine the young people did too.” With coffees and milkshakes in hand, the group explores God’s word and prays together in a way that feels natural and engaging.
These churches remind us that youth ministry doesn’t have to mean big events or packed programmes. Sometimes it’s as simple as showing up, listening well, and opening the Bible where young people already feel at home.
