In the summer of 2021, Thrive launched a Puppet Team because we believed it would be an opportunity to be creative while sharing God’s love to many.As the team grew (which now consists of six young people and four adults, all coming from five different churches) and became more confident with technique and lip synchronisation, they were able to prepare their first performance ever!

Our amazing team worked together to perform a Christmas routine to the song,  ‘Mary’s Boy Child’. It was a delight to see the team come together, never having done puppetry before and performing a joyful song so well.

We had it all – Mary, Joseph, shepherds, sheep, angels and even a camel on the saxophone! The young people thoroughly enjoyed it.

Rehearsals started back in October, with some pizza, and the team worked really hard through November and December to put this performance together. It was such an amazing opportunity for the team to bond, work together and it created so much enthusiasm for the final performance.

The Puppet team was invited to perform at Whitnash Methodist Church at their Messy Church and at the Lego Club at St Paul’s Church, Warwick and both performances were favourably received. Sally Jones, the minister from Whitnash Methodist Church said “We were very excited to watch the world premiere of the new Thrive Puppet Team with their fabulous version of ‘Mary’s Boy Child’. It was brilliantly done and really put us all in a Christmassy mood!! Huge thanks to all the team at Thrive – especially the debut puppeteers!”

As the new year starts, the team is now working on a moving song for Easter and looking for a couple of churches that might be interested for them to perform.
They would also love to see more puppeteers join the group. One of the puppeteers, Tyler aged 13, says “It’s fun! I like learning a new skill “. So why not give it a try?

“Puppetry is an incredible tool for ministry that is fun and powerful at the same time. Children (and adults) love to watch and it’s a cool way to emphasise the message in such a visual and radical way that will be remembered for a lifetime! We believe puppetry is a great step to making a Kingdom difference”
Fiona Stutton, Children’s Ministry Adviser and lead of the Puppet Team
