Investing in young leaders at First Sunday team day

In September, we hosted a day to invest in young people who want to help be a part of leading the monthly youth worship, service, First Sunday. First Sunday is a fantastic opportunity for Christian young people across Leamington and the surrounding area to come together and worship God. The services are planned, organised and led by young people. Andy Castle and Thrive’s treasurer, Simon Archer, give oversight to the young leaders and help them to think through how they might best lead.

Simon is also a deacon at Leamington Spa Baptist Church, where First Sunday is held each month and where First Sunday first started. Simon has a passion to see people come into a living relationship with Jesus and to enable them to fully partake in all that it means to be Spirit-filled Christians. It is great working with someone who is so keen to see young people be alive in Christ.

Our team day was a great opportunity for us to invest in the young leaders, coming from different local churches.

First Sunday has a leadership team which is made up currently of seven young people and they have different areas of responsibility. There are four areas which focus on service management, worship team, set-up/tech and events/publicity.

Our team day gave us a chance to praise God for what has been going well at the services as well as to ask ourselves how can we improve what we do. There were some good discussions and some difficult issues started to be grappled with as we considered how First Sunday can continue to serve the young people in the area and to attract more from local churches.

If you are a youth leader and have never been to First Sunday can I encourage you to come along to the next one? Bring your youth group with you, or come alone the first time, if you prefer. The services are aimed at Christian young people aged 13+ and are designed to inspire, equip and unite young people in worshipping Jesus. First Sunday happens, not surprisingly, on the first Sunday of every month (except August) at 8pm at Leamington Spa Baptist Church. They aim to be finished by 9.30pm and are pretty good at not over-running too often! You’d be most welcome.
